Their work is invaluable yet often goes unrecognised – but now carers are to be given the recognition they deserve.

We are looking for star carers to be honoured through the Yorkshire Evening Post Best of Health Awards 2016.

The Carer of the Year category is open to both paid carers and those who are unpaid, looking after family or friends.

They may be a young or an older person but they need to have shown complete dedication to their role and deserve to be highlighted through our awards.

Last year’s winner was Jakub Keller, a community carer with Allied Healthcare, who was nominated for treating a patient in the final stages of cancer with dignity and concern as well as physical care.

The awards, sponsored by Sovereign Health Care, will recognise the city’s incredibly dedicated and skilled health care workers who go that extra mile to make a real difference to people’s lives.

The 10 categories include those for community health workers, mental health staff, unsung heroes and teams.

There’s also chance to honour emergency response workers, doctors, nurses and midwives and there’s a special recognition award for an incredible individual, team or family.

Nominations can be put forward by anyone, whether a patient, service user or health professional.

The closing date is October 19, after which a panel of expert judges will then pick the winners from a shortlist in each category. Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a glitzy awards lunch at The Queens Hotel, in Leeds, on December 5, when the winners will be announced.
