Stanley is the name of the newest member of West Yorkshire Police’s mounted section after the force launched a competition.

More than 1,000 people entered the competition to name the four-year-old gelding, which arrived in West Yorkshire in May from a breeder in the Fells.

The name Stanley, suggested by a number of people, was by far the most popular name in a poll launched containing five shortlisted names.

Rebecca Milton, from Lepton near Huddersfield, was randomly selected as the winner and joined her family on a visit to the police’s Carr Gate training complex near Wakefield to meet Stanley.

She said: “Given the recent Boaty McBoatface saga there were suggestions of Horsey McHorseFace. Joking aside, we decided it had to be proper Yorkshire name.”

Police Sergeant Jayne West, who manages West Yorkshire Police’s mounted section, said: “We all love the name Stanley and think it really suits him.”
