The first station to open in Leeds was called Wellington Station in 1846. This later combined with New Station in 1936 to create Leeds City Station

The station has 17 platforms and is used by around 30 million people a year, making it the third busiest railway station in the UK outside London.

Although the official number of station platforms is 17, if you count the subsections there are actually 47 platforms.

An entirely new station was proposed to be built for HS2 but recent plans have recommended new platforms should be added to the existing station.

The shopping and food area by the west entrance to the station dates back to the 1930s. The shops were previously entrances to the platforms.
