A YOUNG British soldier stationed in Cyprus has been stabbed to death during a fight at a nightclub in the resort of Ayia Napa.
According to police spokesman Georgios Economou, four off-duty soldiers got into a fight with three British tourists in the early hours of Sunday morning before one of the tourists allegedly drew a switch blade and stabbed the 19-year-old soldier.
Three British tourists are reported to have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Connie Pierce, a British military spokeswoman, said the incident happened in a part of Ayia Napa that is off limits for British soldiers because of past trouble.
The soldier served with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, but his name is not being released until his family have been notified.
Britain retained two military bases on the island after the former British colony gained independence in 1960.
