Police are investigating reports of a sex attack on a woman in Leeds city centre.

The 23-year-old contacted police at about 5.30am on Friday after the incident on Mark Lane, off New Briggate.

West Yorkshire Police said the victim called them from a pub in Hyde Park, more than a mile away from the incident.

An area of Mark Lane, close to the St John’s Centre, was cordoned off throughout Friday morning as investigations were carried out.

Enquiries remain ongoing and detectives are examining CCTV in a bid to identify the attacker.

They said there was no suggestion of a link with another incident in which a 19-year-old woman was attacked at Maude Street in the city centre at about 5am.

The incident on Mark Lane meant the nearby Age UK cafe was unable to open.

Age UK Leeds tweeted: “The police have not permitted any access to our building so no phones will be answered and we are unable to respond to enquiries today.”
