A man is critically ill in hospital after he was assaulted by three men in the street.

Officers were called to reports of an incident near Foundry Approach in Harehills at around 4.45am on Saturday.

A police spokesman said a 49-year-old man had been found with serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

"It appears the man had been visiting the Misha Food & Wine store as a customer when he became involved in an altercation with three men who were in an argument with two other men," the spokesman said.

"The victim was then attacked by the three who punched him to the ground and kicked and stamped on him."

The men left the shop and got into a 4x4 vehicle, which hit the victim before leaving the scene.

A vehicle, which is believed to be the one involved, was later found burnt out.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace the other men involved in the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Leeds District CID via 101, quoting log number 285 of February 25.
