A Leeds United fan is to face a retrial on five counts of rape.

This week a jury in the Northampton Crown Court trial of former soldier Alan Fawcett, 62, of Collingtree, Northampton, acquitted him of two charges of rape of a young girl, but was discharged by Judge Fowler when they were unable reach a verdict on the remaining five charges.

After more than six hours’ deliberation the foreman indicated they were undecided and unlikely to reach agreement.

Fawcett, famed for his bright yellow attire on United match days, is accused of forcing himself on the girl from when she was in her early teens up until October 2010.

The retrial is expected to be listed for between March and September next year.

Fawcett was remanded in custody.
