A CHILD thug claimed he had a knife during an incident in which a boy was robbed as he enjoyed a birthday spending spree.

The thief – thought to be aged just nine – was with an older accomplice when he made the threat in Leeds city centre.

The 11-year-old victim and his 13-year-old friend had been in the Foot Locker store in the Trinity Shopping Centre when they were confronted by the pair outside.

One of them snatched a bag containing a pair of trainers he had just bought with some birthday money. The young boy then said he had a knife before taking a small amount of cash from the 13-year-old’s bag.

The incident happened at about 3.20pm on Wednesday, August 20.

The younger robber was described as white, about nine years-old and skinny and was wearing white Nike Jordan trainers.

The older boy was black, aged about 15, and chubby. He was wearing Nike Air Force trainers.

Police have issued a CCTV image of the pair.

Anyone who recognises them should contact Detective Constable Matthew Egan at Elland Road via 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
