YOU may remember a while back we told you about the swanky new £15m student accommodation called IconInc.

The lavish apartments near Burley Road aren’t your ordinary student digs, though.

With complimentary daily breakfast, plush king-size beds, a flat screen TV, an on-site gym, personal trainers, a cinema room, games zone, study rooms and a 24-hour concierge, it offers students a taste of the high life. And now one lucky person has won the chance to live there for free for a year.

Arundhati Patel was named Leeds Student Icon 2015 and scooped the prize, worth £7,000.

Hundreds of Leeds students entered the contest, but Arundhati, also known as Aru, won the most public votes due to her hard work and dedication.

Aru is from America but is studying at the University of Leeds and has joined the National Hindu Students Forum and Leeds South Asian Society, where she is responsible for producing all promotional material.

She has also helped mentor students and is part of the Japanese and Korean society as well as Leeds Dancesport.

Multilingual Aru was also a background dancer in a Bollywood film in Leeds recently. Speaking about her win, she said: “Delighted doesn’t begin to express how I feel. It will give me the time to continue my work with charities and societies while studying.

“I am extremely grateful for all the support I received – I owe a lot of people cupcakes!”

Students too often get a bad reputation so it’s good to hear some positive news for once.

Congratulations, Aru!
