Crane topples in Leeds

A crane driver was rescued from his cab after the machine toppled over in Leeds today.

The accident happened at the Arla Foods site on the industrial estate at Pontefract Road, Stourton.

Firefighters from Hunslet, Gipton and Rothwell helped to free the man.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance after the accident. His injuries were not serious, and he was able to return to the Arla site just hours after the accident, which happened at about 8.20am.

Another crane was brought to the scene to move the first one and lift it back into place.

Arla spokeswoman Amanda Hinchliffe said: "There was an incident at our dairy site involving a contractor. Emergency services attended and the crane driver was taken to hospital. Thankfully he was discharged later and was back at the site this afternoon assisting with the investigation into what happened."

The incident was confirmed within the Arla site and did not affect the public roads, Ms Hinchliffe added.
