A VILLAGE-wide garage sale designed to raise cash for schools and promote a sense of community is set to return to Calverley next month.
Two previous Calverley Garage Sale events in 2012 and 2013 were hailed a major success.
In 2013, more than 100 households opened up their garages, gardens and driveways to sell a wide range of second hand items.
They also sold home-made crafts and baking to raise a total of around £3,500 for Calverley Parkside and Calverley C of E Primary schools.
Now, after a year’s break, the Calverley Garage Sale, sponsored by Waite & Co estate agents, has been organised to take place from 11am to 3pm on Saturday March 21.
Mum-of-three Georgina Thompson, 40, of Calverley, is one of the event managers. She said: “The Calverley Garage Sale really has been a fantastic event in previous years. People were disappointed that it didn’t happen last year so we are really please to be staging it again.
“Lots of stallholders made some very healthy profits, as did the two local schools. However, perhaps the best thing to come out of the day was the fantastic community spirit it unleashed. Local people, young and old, were out in their gardens and on the streets, talking to neighbours, earning a bit of money and having fun at the same time.
“Spring is the time we all traditionally want to clean up and clear out and the beauty of this event is that it’s incredibly easy for people to take part. There’s no loading up the car to travel to a car boot sale or tip and the items are being recycled not going to landfill.”
Actor Jeff Hordley, who plays Emmerdale bad boy Cain Dingle, used to live in neighbouring Pudsey and helped launch the Calverley Garage in 2012. For more details, e mail firstname.lastname@example.org or go to ‘Calverley Spring Clean’ on Facebook or follow on Twitter: @calverleyspring.
