AN historic shopping arcade in Leeds city centre is having a £1.5million facelift.

Manchester-based Aura Conservation Ltd will restore the intricately detailed terracotta facades and complex roof domes at the Victoria Quarter.

The company recently signed an 18-month contract worth £1.5million to complete the work at the arcade off Briggate.

The Grade II listed Victoria Gate shopping space was designed by Frank Matcham in 1898.

The newest arcade on Victoria Street was covered over in 1988 with a modern, steel-framed glass roof.

Hoardings surrounding the current building work have been designed to replicate the shop fronts and the work is expected to be completed in July 2016.

The Victoria Quarter is owned by Hammerson.

The company also owns the Victoria Gate development, which is scheduled to open in Autumn 2016.
