A TWO-YEAR pilot scheme to speed up the processing of patent applications in the UK and Germany has been launched.

The Patent Prosecution Highway has been set up by the Intellectual Property Office within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Applicants who have obtained a patent from the UK Intellectual Property Office or the German equivalent can now request faster examination of a corresponding patent application filed in the other country.

Intellectual property minister Baroness Wilcox said: “Speeding up the international patent process means British businesses wishing to expand abroad can do so more quickly and cheaply.”
