Work on a major revamp of Leeds’ 1960s-built Merrion Centre is expected to start early next year after councillors approved the scheme.

Town Centre Securities (TCS), the centre’s owners, will redevelop 80,000 sq ft of retail space into bars, cafes, restaurants and a gym along Merrion Way and Wade Lane.

The development proposals also include the 1,000 space multi-storey car park, which will undergo a complete refurbishment and up-grade.

Helen Beckett, associate director at Town Centre Securities said: “It’s great to get the green light on this important regeneration scheme that could create up to 200 new jobs.”

Leeds City Station was among the top five locations for child safeguarding incidents across the rail network.
