City firm to support £1.5bn water works

AN ENGINEERING consultancy from Leeds has been signed up to help deliver a billion pound investment programme for Northumbrian Water Limited.

Grontmij, based at Mansion Gate Drive in the city, is part of a 10-year "framework" of companies set to assist the water supplier.

The deal is worth 2-4 million a year for Grontmij.

The company will provide consultancy services and technical advice from April to support the water firm's 1.5 billion capital investment programme.

The framework could run until 2021 and the company intends to open an office in the North East.

Managing director John Chubb said: "I am delighted that Grontmij has been appointed to the framework.

"Our significant framework wins throughout the water industry, coupled with many years of knowledge and expertise in a wide range of skills, mean we will start 2011 in a strong position in the market.

"Our challenge now is to bring our considerable expertise and innovation to Northumbrian Water to enhance their business."

The optimism was shared by Dr Colin Price, Northumbrian Water Limited's technical director.

He said: "Selecting a special group of companies to help us deliver our investment programme allows us to guarantee work and quality standards at competitive prices and means we can develop mutually beneficial relationships. It will be particularly welcome in these challenging economic times."
