SUPERMARKET chain Morrisons has seen sales rise in the quarter year up to May 1 – but remains cautious because of the uncertain economy.

Total sales excluding fuel were up by 4.2 per cent and by 7.3 per cent if fuel is factored in.

Like-for-like sales grew by 2.5 per cent – or by 5.8 per cent if fuel is included – during the same period.

A spokesman said: “The board is encouraged by the group’s progress in the first quarter but with consumers’ disposable incomes falling and an uncertain economic environment, we remain cautious.”

All the big four supermarkets increased sales in the 12 weeks to October 8
