One year on for the Greenhouse
PIONEERING low carbon development Greenhouse Leeds will be marking its first birthday this weekend with two events.
The development by Citu in Beeston is a multi-million pound retro-fit mixed-use development which was three years in the making. It has won 28 awards.
Greenhouse has 166 one, two and three-bed apartments, 13,000 sq ft of office space, a conferencing and events centre and an on-site Apart-Hotel.
Residents now service the Greenhouse Deli, maintain a free bike club, tend to allotments, run a local pub quiz and organise a free cycle trading club. Other features include toilets flushed by rainwater and lights powered by wind turbines.
Tomorrow sees a Business Day at the Greenhouse which will include a social media seminar on sustainable working, as well as beer tasting and Bavarian food. There will also be the launch of Eco Office Pods on the site.
On Saturday there will be an open house event from noon until 6pm at which MP Hilary Benn will be present. Citu has commissioned a video to showcase Greenhouse’s Green Champions which will be launched on Saturday.
Citu managing director Chris Thompson said: “What we’ve built with Greenhouse is a low carbon development, using the most pioneering techniques that blend technology and nature, to produce a building with sustainability at its core.
“However, to make Greenhouse succeed what we need to achieve is a sustainable community, not just a low carbon building, and this will come down to the end users who live and work here.
“Building a sustainable community was always one of the main goals of Greenhouse. It’s fantastic seeing it come to life.”
