New four-storey council building is now ready for use
CONSTRUCTION work on the new civic offices for Wakefield - part of the city’s £140m Merchant Gate scheme - has finished.
Wakefield One has now been formally handed over.
The four-storey building, on Burton Street, was created by English Cities fund (ECf), a partnership between Muse Developments, Legal and General Property and the Homes and Communities Agency. It was designed by Cartwright Pickard Architects and built by Morgan Sindall.
The Merchant Gate scheme will provide 47,000 sq ft of office space, as well as 35,000 sq ft of retail and leisure developments, 66 apartments and a multi-storey car park.
Coun Peter Box, leader at Wakefield Council, said: “We are really pleased with the new building, which looks great, and has been built on time and on budget. Wakefield One will save the council at least £1m a year.”
