Make a date with a new career...online

AN ONLINE careers service has been launched in Leeds to match young people with apprenticeships on offer from local firms.

Apprenticeship Vacancies Online has been launched by the Government's National Apprenticeship Service (NAS).

The aim is to help young people find their dream career and help employers find their ideal employees.

The new online service was set up in response to research undertaken by the NAS, which highlights that many young people are not aware of the diversity of roles and careers available through apprenticeships.

Eighty-four per cent of 14 to 19-year-olds surveyed in Leeds were unaware that they could get a place in one of the creative industries, such as fashion and textiles, whilst 85 per cent were unaware that the financial sector can be offered as a possible career through an apprenticeship.

The research also revealed that the top five dream careers for young people in Leeds are:

Film, TV and media;

IT and communications;

Finance;

Creative and the arts;

Health and beauty.

Shane Gash, 17 from Batley, who is completing his apprenticeship with Leeds City Council's transport division and City Training Services, helped launch the new service.

He was joined by Dave Gaughan, Employer Services Manager for the National Apprenticeship Service, to demonstrate that a role in the motor industry is just one of many career paths that can be achieved through an apprenticeship programme.

Nick Wilson, regional director for the NAS, said: "With apprentices able to pursue a career in sectors ranging from conservation and tourism to the arts and media, the possibilities are endless.

"The new apprenticeship vacancies online aims to clearly display the variety of apprenticeships that are available to potential candidates, as well as streamlining the process to make it easier for employers to take on an apprentice."

More than 130,000 employers currently provide apprenticeships. There are over 180 types of apprenticeships available in more than 80 sectors of industry and commerce.
