Lawyers on the trail of unpaid school fees

A LEGAL firm’s new law department dealing with independent schools is raking in £50,000 a month in unpaid tuition fees for its clients.

The firm has been hired by a number of private schools across the country since it was launched in February by Harrogate-based Ashworth Law.

The specialist department was set up after the practice found that the UK’s 1,800 private schools were owed in excess of £30 million in unpaid fees.

Ashworth Law co-founder Mathew Cobley said the decision to offer the specialist service had paid off for the firm.

He said: “Our expertise is helping clients, individuals and businesses recover money owed to them.

“We identified independent schools as a target market and launched this new division in February.

“In just a few months we have been appointed by schools from all over the country to act on their behalf in recovering unpaid tuition fees.

“The figures in question range from just a few hundred pounds right up to more than £25,000 in one case.”

He added: “Independent schools are like any other business and bad debts, particularly if they are significant, can result in a school closing its doors for good.

“It’s important these debts are chased down as quickly as possible.”

Ashworth Law’s success in dealing with mis-sold financial policies led the firm to expand its client services, including the addition of personal injury and family law departments, as well as being commissioned by major companies to recover debts on their behalf, both in the UK and abroad.
