Holy wood stars of Pope's visit to UK

ECCLESIASTICAL furniture made specially for the Pope's recent visit to the UK has a link to Leeds.

Arnold Laver Timber World of Pontefract Road, Stourton, provided the hardwood for six pieces.

Pope Benedict XVI used them for private ceremonies during his stay in Britain.

These included an altar, lectern, tabernacle stand, two server chairs, and the celebrant's chair which bore the Pope's coat of arms etched into the glass panel.

These pieces of furniture were made by NEJ Stevenson Ltd, bespoke manufacturers, following an approach to Arnold Laver from the Timber Trades Federation. Lavers were asked to supply prime European oak.

Sales director David Walker said: "We were happy to help and to ensure the right quality wood was used for such a prestigious project.

"In our capacity as timber experts, we are often asked to supply materials for all types of work. To think that the hardwood we supplied would be used in furniture for Pope Benedict was a real honour."

The Timber World division of Arnold Laver has grown to become one of the largest timber merchants in the UK.

Its 12 depots stock a wide range of softwoods, hardwoods, sheet materials, laminates, joinery products, kitchens and building products for nationwide delivery or call collect.

Timber World also offers services such as machining, panel cutting, timber treatment, panel fabrication and roof truss/flooring manufacture.
