Firm secures future for historic church
EXPERTS at a Leeds-based firm have helped secure the future of an historic Methodist chapel.
Over the years, Woodlesford Methodist Church had been struck by severe damp and erosion and even had nesting birds living in its wall cavities.
However, the building has been sympathetically renovated in a partnership between Sherburn-in-Elmet-based Brick-Tie Ltd and historical and ecclesiastical architects, Arctic Associates.
Managing director Bryan Hindle said the building had been in in a bad state, adding: "This type of work requires particular care using renovation materials sympathetic to the original materials – and replacing the most severely eroded stones with reclaimed matching material."
The work was completed using natural lime pointing, a technique which – though presenting different challenges – delivers a lower carbon footprint compared to conventional cement based mortars.
Russell Trudgen of Arctic Associates says the feedback from the Minister, Alan Wilthew, the church wardens and the congregation has been excellent.
He said: "In these cases, it's very useful to be able to talk to a walking encyclopedia and Bryan Hindle and his colleagues at Brick Tie are exactly that. Importantly, a historic and much loved building will continue to serve its community for many more years ".
