College aims to attract the apprentices

A COLLEGE is offering a week of advice for young people and their parents as National Apprenticeship Week gets under way.

The Apprenticeship Surgery is aimed at anyone interested in pursuing a career in the construction sector.

National Apprenticeship Week runs until Friday and aims to highlight the opportunities available to the young - and how employers can benefit from taking on apprentices.

Leeds College of Building’s Apprenticeship Surgery initiative allows young people and their parents to make appointments to visit its North Street site and find out information about apprenticeships in more than 20 construction-related trades.

The College will also be hosting a Civil Engineering Consortium tomorrow from noon-4.30pm with the Institute of Civil Engineering, the National Apprenticeship Service and employers including Mott MacDonald, Tata Steel Projects, Grontmij, Halcrow, Adept Consulting Engineers, WSP and Pell Frischmann.

The College is promoting Higher Apprenticeships which are an alternative to university and consist of a Level 5 NVQ in Sustainable Built Environment and a HND in Construction & the Built Environment with the option to select construction, civil engineering or building services as a specialist subject. These courses can lead to a career in a variety of areas.

Leeds College of Building principal Ian Billyard said: “National Apprenticeship Week is an ideal opportunity for young people to find out about the wide range of career opportunities available in the construction industry. Despite it being well publicised that construction has been hit hard during the recession the industry still offers great job prospects and accounts for almost 10 per cent of UK GDP, employs approximately two million people and has to recruit approximately 44,000 new entrants every year.”
