Bosses at Leeds firm Pegler confirm "innovative" one week shutdown plan
BOSSES at the Leeds manufacturing site of Pegler Yorkshire have confirmed that the business will close for a week from Monday "to balance manufacturing output with forecast demand".
Pegler Yorkshire Group Ltd was formed at the start of the year through the merger of the trading activities of Leeds-based Yorkshire Fittings - known to many under its historic former name of Yorkshire Copperworks - and Pegler, based at Doncaster.
The YEP revealed on Saturday that the sites were to close for a week from Monday, February 16.
In a statement today, the company confirmed that the business was "experiencing a downturn in many of its markets" but said the impact was being mitigated by bringing more manufacture in house and launching new products.
Of the temporary shutdown, the statement added: "This action has been positively accepted by our employees who, in the main, intend to bring forward holidays to use during this period.
"This innovative solution helps minimise the impact of the current situation in the construction sector on the company and its employees."
Pegler Yorkshire Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aalberts Industries, a public company listed on the Amsterdam stock market and the world's largest supplier of metal plumbing products.
The combined business has four factories, employing around 1,000 people, and its two Yorkshire-based plants specialise in high volume products.
The company said it intended to introduce several new and innovative ranges of plumbing fittings into the UK and European markets and these were currently being manufactured at Leeds.
"The business is experiencing growth of products into the commercial sector and has been very successful at securing sales of its products into new hospital and schools projects," the statement added.
