Beauty salon owner's business award is a real tonic
A WEST Yorkshire businesswoman who overcame tragedy has won a top award in the 2009 Barclays Trading Places Awards.
Sheryden Clegg, who owns a beauty salon in Halifax, was six months pregnant when she lost her fianc in a road accident in November 1989.
She was devastated but determined to make a life for herself and her son.
After taking a beauty training course, she started providing mobile beauty treatments to clients in nursing and residential homes, and also set up her own market stall selling make-up and toiletries.
All went well until she broke her leg, landing her in a wheelchair for eight weeks. She lost her clients as well as her stall, leaving her despondent and depressed.
After her recovery, she opened her own salon in Halifax Borough Market.
She entered the award scheme which is a national award honouring men and women who are turning their lives around.
The Government-backed awards recognise business heroes who are no strangers to overcoming business adversity. She now goes on to the national finals.
