FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a blaze at an abandoned Leeds school.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews were called to the old St Michael’s College building on St John’s Road in Woodhouse at around 8.20pm yesterday (May 26).

Crews from Leeds, Hunslet, Stanningley and Gipton and an aerial appliance attended the scene and managed to extinguish the fire, which involved three floors of the building.

The YEP previously reported that Leeds council planning chiefs turned down plans for a £40m scheme to revamp the building earlier this month.

The plans would have also seen the original 1908 college building preserved as part of a mixed scheme for apartments and student flats but there were fears that the apartments would be too small.

The Watkins Jones Group had originally submitted a planning application in November 2013 and the decision was deferred for further discussions with the developer.
