A group of Leeds bikers are helping to bring festive cheer to youngsters in the city.

Leeds Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) are poised for their tenth Toy Run on Wednesday, and will set off from Kirkstall.

The annual pre-Christmas ride sees bikers head to Lineham Farm Children’s Centre in Eccup where they present youngsters with toys.

Richard Manton, representative of the group, says the event brings joy to all involved.

He said: “It’s such a gratifying thing to do and it’s a nice event to be a part of.

“We’ve been doing it for 10 years now. “We all head up there and the youngsters usually put on a show for us after we hand out the presents, such as a musical or song and dance.

“It’s a really nice thing to do, especially at this time of year.

“Putting a smile on the kids’ faces is what it’s all about.”

Richard estimates that around 20 to 25 riders will be heading up to the Children’s Centre.

He is hoping that the event will help to regain public trust in motorcyclists following incidents of anti-social behaviour involving bikers.

In October, up to 50 riders descended on Kirkstall Road, forcing its closure as they rode in a gathering organised on social media.

Richard says events such as the Toy Run are just an example of the good work that bikers do.

“After the debacle in October, society tends to tar everyone with the same brush.

“But this provides a nice contrast to that anti-social behaviour, and is a heart-warming story in the run-up to Christmas.”
