MORE than 1,000 people enjoyed a fruitful time at Headingley Apple Day on Saturday.

They answered an appeal for people to bring all the apples they could muster from gardens and allotments to Headingley Enterprise and Arts Centre on Bennett Road.

Youngsters then helped with the task of hand pressing the thousands of donated apples to create around 200 litres of fresh juice, which was sold help raise funds for next year’s Headingley Apple Day.

Apple Day is held across the country each year to celebrate apples, orchards and the fruits of our common spaces, gardens and allotments.

It was initiated by Common Ground in 1990 as a way of demonstrating that variety and richness matter to local areas and it is possible to effect change where you live.

Helen Seymour of HEART helped organise Saturday’s annual event in Headingley.

She said: “It was a fabulous day, people really enjoyed it.

“There were lots of kids at the event and they had lots of fun. We also had stalls, apple identification and apples for sale.

“There is so much wastage of apples and English apples have not been appreciated over the years.

“We import about 75 per cent of the apples we eat in this country and yet out apples are some of the best and tastiest.

“The juice from the apples pressed on Saturday was some of the best we have ever tasted.”

Mark Simmonds, the founder of a cider co-operative in Calderdale, ran a workshop on cider making.

And Sandra Bell of Friends of the Earth handed out tips on how to have a bee-friendly garden.
