The A1 southbound carriageway was closed for several hours after a lorry is thought to have crashed through the central reservation from the northbound lanes and hit a car.
Severe traffic delays were experienced along long sections of the road while emergency crews dealt with the accident.
The accident happened at about 5.10am on Friday when the articulated lorry struck a Vauxhall Corsa driven by a woman and then overturned coming to rest partly on and partly off the southbound carriageway near Upton, Pontefract.
Police, fire and rescue staff and ambulance crews were sent to the accident scene between junction 39 and junction 40 for the Pontefract turn-off.
The male driver of the lorry was released from his car before emergency services arrived and was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with a suspected broken leg,but was later discharged after treatment for bruising.
The Corsa driver was treated at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, for shock and was later allowed home.
Another car, a Seat Ibiza was reported to have been involved in the accident.
