IT may be 5,800 miles from Rio’s Copacabana beach, but visitors to Millennium Square soaked up the Olympic spirit as City Beach returned to Leeds for the fourth time this weekend.
The annual seaside extravaganza, complete with giant deckchairs, games, traditional funfair rides and trampolines, took on a sporting theme this year as an official Team GB Fanzone.
Highlights and coverage of the Games will be aired daily on the big screen between 10.30am and 10.30pm, and there is even the chance to have a go at Olympic sports such as shooting, volleyball, table tennis and athletics.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Gerry Harper, officially opened the City Beach and Leeds Fanzone on Saturday.
Council leader, Coun Judith Blake said having a Team GB FanZone on the square as well as City Beach gave the event “an extra dimension” this year.
She added: “With so many Leeds athletes competing at the Games too, it’s a great place cheer on our sporting heroes and I’m sure they will do the city proud.”
