Tributes have been paid to a mum who died in a fatal house fire. The woman, named locally as Carol Padgett, is said to have "had a heart of gold".

Carol, 58, tragically died alongside her Jack Russell pooch in the fire-ravaged home she shared with 62-year-old partner Peter Mosey.

Firefighters arrived at the semi-detached property when it was "well-alight" with five crews battling the blaze in Staincross, near Barnsley, on Friday evening (March 17)

An investigation into how the fire started is still on-going.

A neighbour on the street in New Road said: "I knew Carol lived at the property, I didn't know her name, but I knew her to look at.

"As soon as the fire was put out all the crime scene investigators got in there.

"You couldn't even see the house - I think there was definitely something suspicious going on about it."

The blaze is currently being treated as 'unexplained' until further tests are carried out.

The neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, added: "Nothing like this happens on here, but it is shocking."

Five fire engines attended the incident with crews from Barnsley, Tankerley, Dearne and Cudworth, and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was also called to the scene.

Neighbours said Peter Mosley, who had lived at the property for three decades, "kept himself - to himself" and confirmed Carol had moved in two years ago.

A statement later released by Carol's 34-year-old son Lee Padgett said: "My mum was a very quiet person, who kept herself to herself and had a heart of gold, raised us well and will be sadly missed.

"This has come as a shock to us all and we would ask for our privacy at this time."

A joint police and fire service investigation into the cause of the blaze continues.

Following the incident on Friday evening, South Yorkshire fire service tweeted: "Sadly, a woman has died following a serious house fire in Barnsley this evening."

They added: "Firefighters were called to the incident on New Road, Staincross at around 5:49pm this evening (Friday)."
