A SENIOR detective from South Yorkshire Police was among 10 people detained by West Yorkshire officers probing fraud and money laundering offences.
Det Insp Shakeel Ahmed from Sandal, Wakefield, was questioned at Wakefield's Wood Street Police Station following the swoops by police on homes and business premises in the Agbrigg and Sandal areas earlier in the week.
South Yorkshire Police have
so far failed to comment on the arrest of DI Ahmed.
All those arrested were later released on bail pending further inquiries.
West Yorkshire Police have declined to give details of those arrested other than to say that nine were detained in Agbrigg and one in Sandal.
One of the nine arrested in Agbrigg was a woman.
During the raids carried out under the powers of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) by Wakefield Police Division, officers seized approximately £150,000 cash, 14 cars believed to be worth in excess of £150,000 including a BMW X5, Jaguar XKR and a Mazerati, and a significant amount of gold jewellery.
What was believed to be a cannabis farm was also discovered and dismantled by police.
Det Insp Paul O'Dowd, of Wakefield Police, said: "These people have been arrested in relation to a money laundering investigation. We have invested money to set up a financial investigation unit to deal with this type of investigation which involves criminal property being converted into cash and made to appear legitimate.
"We are keen to hear about anyone who appears to be involved in crime and living a lifestyle which is clearly beyond their means."
People guilty of money laundering and fraud risk having their assets such as homes, vehicles and other possessions confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
Any monies raised through these seizures can be used by West Yorkshire Police to fund further POCA investigations or ploughed back into the local community.
Det Chief Insp Andy Williams, Wakefield District Division Crime Manager, said: "The local Neighbourhood Policing Team are currently conducting follow-up enquiries and reassurance patrols in the area. Feedback we have received from the local community has been very positive so far.
"I would still urge members of the public if they know of anyone who is profiting from illegal activity to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or visit
