Emmerdale trio go into pop battle against ratings rivals
BY JO ROSTRON
EMMERDALE stars will show off their singing talents on Friday in the battle to be this year's Soapstar Superstar.
Verity Rushworth (Donna Windsor-Dingle); Hayley Tamaddon (Delilah Dingle) and Matthew Wolfenden (David Metcalfe) will go head-to-head with a string of soap rivals all hoping to scoop the accolade which was won last year by Corrie's Richard Fleeshman.
Zoe Ball is set to host the new series which kicks off on Friday when the stars sing live every evening to stay in the show.
Rocky
Viewers will vote to save their favourite soap star as well as choosing the songs they will be singing before the live final a week on Saturday.
Dales heartthrob Matthew Wolfenden is hoping for some rock rather than R&B.
He said: "My voice sort of lends itself quite well to rocky stuff. I've had loads of ideas of songs and when you think about so many, you come up with all these songs that you'd love to get on stage and sing.
"I'd like to sing some Indie, rocky stuff. I'll probably try and stay from all the R & B poppy stuff."
Hayley Tamaddon is hoping for 70s disco and old soul classics and says she'd love to sing like Christina Aguilera.
"Absolute legend that girl is, I love Christina, she's a diva.
"Last year I sang Lulu on Stars in Their Eyes, so (the audience] got a taster of how big my voice is. I'm not very good at opera, so if I get anything that's operatic, I'll really be scared. But hopefully, they'll just expect a bubbly girl to come out and give them a good show."
Geek
Verity Rushworth says her friends and family can't wait for her to take centre stage.
"My friends and family have been really supportive and positive, they can't wait for me to do it. My friends – and mum – have told me not to be a geek and try to be cool, calm and sophisticated, which is going to be hard, but I'll try."
Executive producer Rachel Ashdown said: "This year we have some singers who have never sung on TV before so there are sure to be some great surprises.
"You might think you know the stars from what you see in your favourite soaps but you will be blown away by just how talented this bunch is."
And the bunch includes Gemma Atkinson (Lisa Hunter, Hollyoaks In The City); Antony Cotton (Sean Tully, Coronation Street); Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby, Coronation Street); Tupele Dorgu (Kelly Crabtree, Coronation Street); Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl Kennedy, Neighbours); Mark Furze (Eric 'Ric' Dalby, Home and Away) and Elaine Lordan (Lynne Hobbs, EastEnders).
