National Trust chiefs say there were 33,000 more visitors in 2009 compared to 2
008.

Visitor services manager Janet Bradley, said: "This is a real milestone for Nostell Priory. Since 1954 when the National Trust took over, the number of people visiting us has been variable.

"Over the past few years we've worked very hard to make Nostell a place that people want to visit, and have steadily increased visitors during that time.

"We were worried that the credit crunch could have been a problem this year, however, lots of people have holidayed at home and we've seen record numbers throughout this season.

"Our visitors have come from all over the world this year. So I was delighted to welcome our 100,000th visitor, local resident Sonia Selby from Ackworth.

"Sonia is a regular visitor to Nostell, but this is her first visit to see the house at Christmas and she was really pleased to be visitor number 100,000."

Nostell is currently decorated for Christmas and is open until Sunday from 11am to 4pm. The shop, tearooms and playground are also open.
