TWO Leeds Labour MPs have voted against the government's measures to liberalise embryo research.
George Mudie (Leeds East) and Paul Truswell (Pudsey) were among 10 Labour rebels against the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill last night.

The legislation permits the creation of embryos containing human and animal material for studying diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

It also includes plans to allow saviour siblings – screened as embryos to be able to donate to sick siblings – and removes the requirement that IVF clinics consider a child's need for a father

Mr Mudie said he "strongly opposed" the creation of the hybrid human and animal embryos. Mr Truswell voted both against and in favour of the Bill, which was given a second reading by 340 votes to 78.
