Artwork of classic albums to go on display in Leeds
BY CHRIS MURPHY
IT'S an iconic image from one of the most iconic singles the world has ever seen – or listened to.
The Band Aid single Do They Know It's Christmas remains an instantly recognisable classic, and the cover image is synonymous with its massive global success.
The inspiration behind the cover was Sir Peter Blake, and prints of this – signed by Band Aid founder Bob Geldof and the only one of its kind in the world – and his other striking sleeves, including artwork for Eric Clapton and Paul Weller, are going on permanent display in the city.
Beatles
If that wasn't enough, it is hoped that a print of the artwork featured on The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, which organisers hope to have signed by the two remaining Beatles – Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr – will make its way to Leeds.
The University of Leeds school of music is to put 15 works relating to popular music on show from February 10, and Sir Peter will be at the launch next month.
All of the covers are signed by the musicians and the artist. Simon Warner organised the music art gallery and collaborated with Peter Blake's music art publisher and former Leeds University entertainment secretary Pete Smith to produce the display.
Mr Warner said: "We are delighted to play host to this unique collection of art works.
Talents
"Sir Peter Blake is one of Britain's greatest artistic talents and his work with popular musicians from the Beatles to Eric Clapton to Robbie Williams is world renowned.
"To have access to the iconic Sergeant Pepper cover is for the School of Music, particularly exciting."
Lara Ruffle, 20, who is studying popular and world music, said: "It's a nice thing to have in our department and I am sure it will provide inspiration for our students."
The exhibition in the foyer of the Clothworkers' Centenary Concert Hall will be open from February 10 during reception hours.
