Stolen car crashes in Leeds

A stolen car crashed into traffic lights and caught fire in Leeds just minutes after it was spotted by police.
The driver of the green Saab 900 car is believed to have run off from the vehicle after hitting the railings and traffic lights at the junction of York Road and Marsh Lane, Burmantofts, at 11.16pm yesterday.

ed stolen earlier from the Roundhay area of the city.

It was spotted by a police patrol car in Rookwood Road,Osmondthorpe, Leeds, at about 11.10pm and the officers took up pursuit.

As they chased the vehicle they lost sight of it in heavy traffic, said a spokesman for West Yorkshire Police.

Shortly afterwards the car struck the traffic lights and railings destroying both.

The car caught fire and crews from Gipton Fire Station extinguished the blaze.

A 23-year-old man was later arrested nearby by police on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

He was treated at Leeds Infirmary for minor injuries and was detained in police custody.
