KEEN swimmers – young and old – were tickled pink at the prospect of free pool time across West Yorkshire.
A group of schoolchildren from Dewsbury made a splash in a specially dyed pink pool to launch Swim4Free that starts today.
It celebrated free swim sessions for all those aged over 60 or under 16 at all 50 public baths in the Leeds, Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford areas for the next two years.
Download a full list of sessions at www.leeds.gov.uk/swim4free or ask at your local leisure centre.
Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis as demand is expected to be high.
You will need to present a Breezecard, LEEDSCard 60 or LEEDSCard 60 Extra. Alternatively you can take proof of identification and fill in a form on arrival.
Swim4Free is part of a national plan for the whole nation to benefit from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in London and the legacy the sporting events will leave behind.
By taking part in the scheme, al authorities will receive funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to invest in improvements at leisure centres.
Leeds will receive more than £250,000. Further funding is also expected in the next two years.
Nigel Harrison, director of West Yorkshire Sport, said that the scheme was a fantastic opportunity.
"Swimming is a great way to keep active and healthy and we hope that many people take advantage of this free offer and swim regularly," he said.
