Feziwe Faith Radebe died at 10.15am on Saturday after a long battle with bowel cancer.

Leeds United legend Lucas was said to be touched by support from the city and his former club where an announcement was made at Saturday's home game against Brighton.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Lucas's manager Glyn Binkin told the YEP: "He (Lucas) is planning a trip to Leeds, and definitely Elland Road, in the not-too-distant future where he can personally show his gratitude to all who have stood by him through thick and thin.

"Leeds United FC and the city of Leeds remains a very important part of his life and the family only really returned to South Africa when they did as a result of Feziwe's illness and her longing to be closer to her family during what were very difficult times."

Mr Binkin added: "The best tribute to Feziwe would be to see Leeds United grow from strength to strength and to rightfully reclaim its place amongst the top clubs in world football. Marching on together!"

He paid tribute to Feziwe, describing her as a "woman of substance" and said they had already received more than 300 messages of support from Leeds Utd supporters.

"She was a devoted wife and loving mother and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. I know how much she longed to come back to Leeds, her home away from home, and was only recently talking about the very special memories that she has of Leeds and the extended Leeds United Football family and how she was looking forward to returning to as she put it "the good old days".

The family had returned to their hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa, some months ago and Lucas is expected to remain there with their two children, Lucas Hugo, nine, and Owami, aged four. Their house in Linton, near Wetherby, is believed to be up for sale.

Former Leeds United manager Howard Wilkinson brought the football star to Leeds United in 1994 when the team were in their Premiership heyday.
He told the YEP: "It's a tragedy. Lucas came from a very hard background.

"He's made a huge success of his life and it seems as if now he's finished playing and he's more able to enjoy the fruits of his labour, it seems even more painful that he has gone though the time he's gone through and now ultimately he has to face this."

Family friend David Share, from Leeds, was best man at the couple's wedding in Sun City, South Africa, five years ago. He said:"Feziwe was exceptionally brave. We are all very sad and we are all thinking of him. She has battled, she has been a real fighter but a fighter with a smile on her face."

Feziwe was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2005 just days after Lucas's charity testimonial at Elland Road.
