TALENTED Leeds teens are set to launch a major national drive to help develop budding young performers, artists and culture vultures.

By Jo Francisco
Leeds has been chosen as one of 10 cities to pilot a national Find Your Talent campaign – a £25m scheme giving kids the chance to discover their musical, literary and artistic talents.

The city will receive £2.4m to help encourage young people to experience five hours of culture a week as part of the scheme.

This will be delivered through a series of outlets as 60 local groups are backing the drive, from the Yorkshire Evening Post to the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Opera North and the Royal Armouries.

The project will be launched tomorrow when the city council's Breeze Has Talent Show also takes to the stage at The Carriageworks theatre. There, 15 acts will take to the stage to showcase the city's finest performers in a range of arts and dance.

And all 15 will be the first to go through the Find Your Talent campaign which will see them getting guidance to help develop skills.

Organisers stress the project is open to all youngsters, who will be given the chance to try out different cultural and creative activities.

From music to art, film to theatre, museums or heritage, Find Your Talent is for everyone regardless of their ability.

Coun Stewart Golton, executive board member for Children's Services, said: "The Breeze Has Talent Show and the Find Your Talent campaign are ideal stages for our young people to demonstrate their ability to the city."

A panel of judges representing cultural organisations in Leeds will pick the winners and all finalists will receive support to develop their talent.

Meanwhile, a singing sensation from Dewsbury is hoping to make her mark over at the City Varieties on Sunday night. Sarah Dickerson, 29, has made the regional final competition of Idol 2008 which she hopes to win, to get through to the Grand National in November.
