Residents in Leeds were evacuated after a gas blast scare.
A fire involving gas cylinders broke out in Crossgates yesterday and 40 homes had to be evacuated because of the risk that they would explode.

Though the fire in a domestic garage was put out quickly, firefighters have spent the night at the scene in Poplar Avenue cooling the cylinders.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said they were called at 1.28pm yesterday.

She said crews from Stanks and Gipton found a car ablaze in the garage, which also contained cylinders of the flammable gas acetylene.

Because of these, a 200 metre exclusion zone was put in place with people living in Poplar Avenue, Austhorpe Road and Marshall Terrace told to leave their homes.

West Yorkshire Police closed roads in the area and a cordon was put up around the exclusion zone.

Leeds City Council's Emergency Planning Team were also called to help co-ordinate the evacuation, with residents taken to John Smeaton Sports Centre nearby.

It is believed some were given overnight accommodation at a hotel in Colton.

Emily Boldison, 22, of Chestnut Avenue, said: "I've had to leave my car at a pub further down the street because I could not drive to my house."
Cooling the cylinders, using cold water, is expected to take fire crews 24 hours.
