A police car chase ended in a two car smash in the city centre early today.

The marked police vehicle - a Vauxhall Vectra - collided with a Skoda Octavia shortly before 3am on The Headrow at its junction with Vicar Lane.

An eye witness said that the police had been chasing another vehicle when the crash occurred.

The driver and passenger of the Skoda were taken to Leeds General Infirmary. The police officers involved also suffered minor injuries.

The road, which was closed both ways between the Park Square East junction and the Vicar Lane junction in Leeds, was expected to reopen at 8am.

West Yorkshire Police investigations are ongoing.
