TRIBUTES continued to be paid today to two teenage friends from Skipton who died when their car plunged into an icy Yorkshire canal.

Leeds University student Sarah Woolmer, 19 and her friend Larissa Sinead Moore, 18, both from Skipton were in a Peugeot 206 which crashed through the railings at the edge of a winding road alongside the Leeds-Liverpool canal sometime on Monday night. They were not found until the next morning.

A Facebook internet group set up in memory of Sarah, who celebrated her 19th birthday just a fortnight ago, now has almost 700 members.

Floral tributes to both girls today marked the spot where they died.

The families of both teenagers were still too upset to talk about their loss.

However at the scene of the crash, less than two miles from both girls' family homes, a wave of pretty bouquets and bunches of flowers lined the remains of the metal railings where the green Peugeot 206 crashed.

Signs of a happy student life surrounded the tributes, including half drunk glasses of wine and chocolates left at the canalside.

A friend of popular drama student Sarah, Sarah Emmott, 21, spoke of her dear friend, who was bubbly, kind and an "angel" to all who knew her.

She said her pal was a hard-working student with her whole life ahead of her.

"I just can't believe it," she said. "I only saw her on Friday night and we were laughing and joking around as we always did.

"But now she's not here anymore. It doesn't seem real.

"She was so much fun.

"We first met when I fell over at the bus station and she just picked me up off the floor.

"I'd hurt myself but she took me to sit down and stayed with me until I was ok. She was like an angel.

"She didn't even know me when that happened but we were friends for life after that."

One of Sarah's best friends, Becky Whiteoak, also paid tribute to her late pal.

A message attached to a bright bunch of springtime flowers left at the scene described Sarah as "one in a million".

Many tributes to the girls have also been paid on this website.

Another reader Laura Preston said: "I can't believe this has happened. I am in total shock. A cruel world which you always seemed to make brighter with your smile Larissa.

"Always in our memories, our love goes out to Andrew and your family at this time. You will never be forgotten Larissa. Sweet dreams and rest in peace."

Police are still trying to piece together Sarah and Larissa's journey from 8.30pm on Monday night.

They said the car was being driven on the A6069 from the town centre towards the A59.

It crashed near a bridge and farmhouse on a bendy section of the road.

A major underwater search and rescue operation was launched and divers and fire crews searched the canal.

The girls' bodies were discovered in the water and the wreckage was winched from the water.

The Peugeot was upside down when a crane lifted it from the canal.
