Leeds United fans were today facing up to the prospect of inflation-busting season ticket price rises - regardless of whether the Whites win promotion.

United have announced a price increase of 10 per cent for adult season ticket holders who renew for the 2008-09 campaign before March 1.

But adult fans who put off renewing until the period between March 2 and April 28 will have to fork out an extra 20 per cent for their tickets compared to this season.

New applicants who buy full-priced season tickets before April 28 will pay nearly 20 per cent more than they would have done for the current campaign.

No details are available yet on the prices which will be charged after April 28, although they are again likely to involve an increase.

Leeds say the confirmed rises will take effect even if they fail to win promotion back to the Coca Cola Championship from League One.

The club is also stressing that the increases will not affect younger supporters, with the price of junior season tickets having been frozen.

Under the revised structure, an adult season ticket in Elland Road's West Stand will cost a pre-April 28 new applicant £650 - a rise of nearly £100.

Full-priced Revie Stand tickets will cost between £410 and £470, assuming the purchase is made before April 28.

Current season ticket prices in the Premiership range from £249 at Blackburn Rovers to £1,825 at Arsenal.

Supporters at Championship outfit Sheffield United are paying no more than £449.

Writing in the programme for Leeds's game against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, chief executive Shaun Harvey said fans who made quick purchases would be doing their bit for the team.

He said: "Season ticket income is exceptionally valuable to the club and its early receipt allows us to plan for the 2008-09 season.

"We are then able to make an early approach to those players we believe can improve the playing squad."

Leeds slashed the cost of their tickets before the start of this season - their first in the third tier of English football.

Those reduced prices coupled with the side's promotion-chasing form have helped attract a series of bumper crowds to Elland Road since August.

The club's average attendance during the first half of the campaign was just over 27,500 - higher than several teams in the Premiership.

The weekend's derby with Doncaster, meanwhile, was attended by 31,402 supporters.

High ticket prices were blamed by many for the relatively disappointing crowds at Elland Road for much of last season, when 11 league games were watched by less than 20,000 fans.

Another "masterclass" in terms of timing from Ken Bates' announcing this measure just before being comprehensively outplayed by Doncaster Rovers.

Does Bates not realise that the only tangible asset Leeds United have is their fan base, everything else having being pawned or sold off during the last 4 years? What a way to repay the loyalty of the thousands who have turned out to support the team this season, (average home gates of 27,500+).

The sooner he sells up post June 2008 the better; - i can't see any of the so called mythical business partners allegedly waiting in the wings to invest in the club doing so whilst he is at the helm.

It's a pity he wasn't shown the door by KPMG last summer and replaced as Chairman by someone like Adam Pearson.

Regards,
Steve Gibson.

Another "masterclass" in timing from Ken Bates by announcing the large increases in season ticket prices just before we were comprehensively outplayed by Doncaster Rovers.

Does he not realise that the only asset that Leeds United have left is their fan base, everything else having been pawned or sold off during the last 4 years? Average home attendances of 27,500+ this season are testament to this; - the highest average of any of our fellow Yorkshire clubs.

I for one would be happy to see the back of Bates post-June this year when any financial penalties for making money out of the sale of the club end.

I was disappointed that KPMG found in his favour last summer, hoping against hope that someone like Adam Pearson would gain control & instal Paul Jewell as manager. The potential here is vast if only we could get the right people in charge.

Regards,
Steve Gibson. (Not the Middlesbrough Chairman!)
