Music fans are being urged to boycott concerts in Sheffield in protest at its attempts to derail the Leeds arena scheme.
Sheffield MPs have been long-standing opponents of plans for the entertainment venue, which they fear could damage trade at their city's existing arena.

Their lobbying bore partial fruit last week when the Government refused to approve Yorkshire Forward's proposed £18m investment in the Leeds scheme in its current form.

And, although Leeds City Council bosses are adamant the arena WILL still be built, one local MP says it's now time to hit Sheffield where it hurts – in the wallet.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "It is a disgrace the way some Sheffield MPs have sought to interfere.

"Everyone in Leeds should now boycott Sheffield Arena to show how we feel about that.

"Like many people living in Leeds, I have used Sheffield Arena – but I will not be doing so again."

Mr Mulholland has also tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons condemning the Government's stance on the Leeds arena.
Lord Mandelson's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has said it will not approve Yorkshire Forward's investment unless further development work is carried out on the scheme.

It says the work is needed to ensure the project provides the "best possible value for money".

Yorkshire Forward, the region's publicly-funded development agency, needs BIS approval for investments of more than £10m.

As reported in last night's YEP, council bosses are working on a fallback funding plan in case ministers continue to block Yorkshire Forward's involvement after the requested work has been carried out.

Sheffield MPs have argued that the agency should not invest in a scheme that favours one part of the county over another, as its brief is to improve the economy of the region as a whole.

I agree that the way some Sheffield MP have behaved is wrong but to suggest we escalate the matter by boycotting Sheffield concerts is just childish. Grow up Greg.

I agree with Greg yes hurt them in the pocket, Manchester Arena has been taking money off them for years anyway. What do they have to say about that in Sheffield?

The argument that we can just use theirs doesn't wash, we don't all have a car you know and when the weather is bad in winter you can't be sure that your're going to arrive there at all. Add to that when its a package you have no say in where you sit and booking early doesn't always mean you are going to get a good seat and its totally unsatisfactory.

This knock-back in funding has set a precedent now, they will think they can object to whatever development Leeds proposes now. They forget the fact that the arenas in England had some sort of public funding whether partially or entirely and the Sheffield Arena was no different.

As a Leeds born and bred citizen I am right behind you. Keep up the good work Greg.

Best regards.

Carol

"Yorkshire Forward is the regional development agency, charged with improving the Yorkshire & Humber economy."

Isn't that exactly what Yorkshire Forward is trying to do by offering Leeds the £18m as an investment for the future?

It is after all an investment and Yorkshire Forward will no doubt end up with a large stake in the arena, and any profits it makes.

£18m is peanuts compared to what the Government is spending on the Olympics, but all that cash is getting spent in London so there isn't a problem getting funding.

Yorkshire Forward, in Yorkshire, would surely know where there money is best invested, rather than the Government in London.

Totally agree with Greg, we should boycot them, partly out of protest, but also it is the action of Leeds residents visiting the Sheffield Hallam Arena that is the basis of Sheffield's opposition to one being built in Leeds. If we in Leeds and the surrounding area totally avoid visiting the Sheffield arena, they would have no basis for their opposition to an arena in Leeds as they would suffer no further loss of business.

There has been a lot of talk recently that Leeds' local politicians don't stand up for Leeds as well as local politicians in other areas, so well done Greg for speaking out.

Good to see Leeds' politicians showing a bit of fight. Righteous!

Absolutely boycott the Sheffield Arena. Sheffield's objection is contrived and negative. Apparently their arena, unlike every other in the country, was funded by the council, therefore Leeds Council must fund our arena? In other words, Sheffield's MPs will block Leeds' attempts to secure funding for anything that hasn't already received public funding in Sheffield

I don't see how Yorkshire Forward can operate now. Split the budget according to population and let W Yorks get on with regeneration without Sheffield interfering. Then we can get what Leeds is entitled to without subsidising Sheffield all the time

Posting this reply again as my first reply has not been published!!!
What has Sheffield got to do with Leeds?? answer, Nothing, so why do Sheffield MP's incist in sticking their nose into the business of the regional capital.
Sheffield has had an enormous amount of money spent on it over the last 20 years, for things like the Super tram, Sheffield Arena, Sheffiels city airport. The financial money pit for Sheffield seem's to be endless and they are asking for even more money for a link road to the Underused Robinhood airport.
How many MP's from Leeds have complained or tried to stop any of this developement in Sheffield!!!

It is now time for Leeds to assert itself and build this "Super Arena" despite approval or not, people and and visitors to Leeds deserve the best facilities possible...
When will Leeds stop been overlooked, no rapid transit system, no childrens hospital and what ever else Leeds has been refused, it is time that our local authority stopped seeking permission for certain things from the Government, and just asked the people that count, that ofcourse is the people in Leeds.
It is also time that this Government stopped spending billions of tax payers pounds on things for London, if a stadium is to be built in London do they ask for permission or support from the people of Leeds.

Maybe we should have a "Yorkshire Parliament" like Scotland and Wales, this would entitle us to decide for ourselves what is right and best placed for the future growth of our local economy

I will also be swerving meadowhall this year also.
Me and the family normally go there every year jusst before Christmas and spend a small fortune but not any more!
One of the main reasons we used to go was to try and support the folk over in Sheffield after the steel yards shut down and then this is how they repay us???

At the end of the day, there's plenty more arenas to go and see performances and shows at, just head west instead of south.

I for one hope that the reaction of the Leeds folk is so strong that Mr Betts and his cronies will wish they'd never opened their mouths in relation to the arena in Leeds.

Pathetic and childish. I'm from sheffield and have no grudge against leeds having an arena, but no one appears to be able to refute the basic point that to use govt money provided to "yorkshire" to favour one area to the obvious economic detriment of another area cannot be within the brief of "yorkshire" forward. YF's judgment in offering the funds is rightly questionable.
