Kaisers star in DVD that tells story so far...and a
bit further
Exclusive
By Grant Woodward
CHART stars the Kaiser Chiefs star in a film that chronicles their amazing rise to fame.
The Leeds lads – who shot to stardom this year with a string of hit singles – reckon the movie is their equivalent of seminal rock
spoof This Is Spinal Tap.
The have roped in actors to play them as seven-year-olds and 50-somethings in the tongue-in-cheek look at their career.
Drummer and songwriter Nick Hodgson told the YEP: "It's loosely plotted around the history of us five gents and our outlook on the world from childhood through to 25 years in the future.
"You could say it's our very own Spinal Tap. It's extremely amusing, even if we do say so ourselves."
Love Actually star Bill Nighy narrates the flick, called Enjoyment, and is set to be released on DVD at the end of November.
There are also unlikely special guest appearances from This Morning hosts Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton.
Famous
Nick said: "The guy who does all the artwork for our single and album sleeves has made the film and he's friends with Bill Nighy so he did it for a hugely knocked-down fee.
"We met Bill at Radio 2 actually and he's a really nice guy. Whenever we meet someone famous we film them saying hello to us so he's on the film as well as narrating it."
The film will include footage shot during the band's earlier incarnation as Parva before they were dropped by their record label and became Kaiser Chiefs.
Fans will get to see the last ever Parva performance at the Cockpit in Leeds in May 2003 – which they ended with a rousing rendition of Survivor's Rocky hit Eye Of The Tiger – and the very first Kaiser Chiefs gig.
"We've done a lot of the filming ourselves down the years," said Nick. "We try to take a camera with us wherever we go."
Highlights from recent shows in Leeds, San Francisco, Glastonbury plus the band's videos are also on the DVD.
Meanwhile the lads, currently on tour in America with Foo Fighters, are looking forward to three sold-out shows this month at Leeds Town Hall.
They will be supported for the October 18,19 and 20 dates by Wakefield band The Cribs plus Maximo Park.
Nick, from Cookridge, said: "The last time I performed there I was playing the flute at a school concert in the 80s. I don't know what it's going to be like. The crowd should be good though."
