AN extra 500 lives will be saved thanks to a massive new health blueprint for Leeds.
That's the promise from bosses at Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT) as they launched a strategy for improving the city's health between now and 2011.
Its aims include preventing 500 premature deaths from illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.
Jill Copeland, director of strategic development, said: "Five hundred people in the city will be living who might not have done. That means a dad, a son, a mother or a sister."
She also told the PCT's annual meeting they also wanted to cut the number of smokers by 55,000 and reduce teenage pregnancy rates.
Chief executive Christine Outram said they were working towards what patients wanted, including better access to healthcare, less waiting, a better patient environment and care closer to home.
The meeting was was held at the start of a health fair in Millennium Square. A huge range of NHS organisations had stalls at the event providing free information, advice and testing.
