A FORMER policeman jailed for punching a handcuffed teenager in the face has launched a new bid to clear his name.
Danny Major was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of assaulting 18-year-old Sean Rimmington at the Bridewell police station in Leeds in 2003.

A subsequent appeal failed and Major also lost his job.

He has now applied for his conviction to be scrutinised by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC).

An independent body which investigates possible miscarriages of justice, it could refer his case for a second appeal hearing.

It is understood that 30-year-old Major has told the CCRC his innocence is supported by CCTV footage taken at the Bridewell on the day of the alleged assault.

The YEP can also reveal that West Yorkshire Police's professional standards department is investigating.

Some of the officers are said to have been at the Bridewell when the assault allegedly took place. Others were involved in the subsequent police inquiry.

Major was released from jail in February last year.
