Frightened Leeds United fans were crushed after queues for crunch match tickets descended into chaos.

Tickets for the play-off final against Doncaster Rovers at Wembley finally sold out at around 7pm on Wednesday almost 24 hours after the queue began.

And it was the biggest at the ground since the FA Cup Semi Final in 1987 as 7,000 fans flocked for tickets.

Both clubs were given 36,000 tickets each but while Leeds United's allocation were swiftly snapped up, by yesterday Doncaster had only sold 22,000.

A spokesman for Doncaster Rovers said the Football League and the police had put restrictions on ticket sales to anyone who was not registered with their club. He said: "We are just not allowed to because of segregation."

Over at Elland Road, hundreds condemned Leeds United for its "disgusting and disgraceful" treatment of fans when they were forced to leave empty handed despite waiting all day, being squashed into pens and left waiting for hours without water, with no updates on ticket sales until they had all gone.

Earlier, ugly scenes erupted as furious fans chanted "stop treating us like animals" when they were crammed into fenced-off areas forming part of the queue.

Children were sick, people fainted and others were pulled to safety as hundreds were corralled before being let out in small groups to join the queue at the ticket office.

Many were dehydrated after waiting hours without water near the enclosure where fans were chanting "let us out".

Yesterday's scenes were reminiscent of the mayhem which marred the build-up to United's last play-off final appearance.

Massive queues meant many supporters had to stand in line at Elland Road for several hours to buy tickets for the game against Watford at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in 2006.

A Leeds United club spokesman told the YEP: "The club learnt a lot of lessons from the play off final in 2006 and obviously when the dust has settled on this final we will have a look at things."

But supporters took a very different view.

Life-long fan Dave McArdle said: "There was potential for a disaster. Leeds United are a disgrace."

The 37-year-old, who waited from 9.30pm on Tuesday and was just a few places from the front when tickets sold out, said: "I'm very, very disappointed with the club. I can't believe how badly they've treated us."

Supporters complained of a complete lack of organisation, claiming there were no stewards when they started queuing on Tuesday afternoon.

Some fans partied, drank and danced through the night but at 6am on Wednesday a large group of newcomers surged to the front and many who had been there since the night before were pushed to the back.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the cordon was put in place for safety, to secure an area before the ticket office opened.

Darren Gallacher, 40, travelled from Oxford on Tuesday afternoon but had to step out of the queue after 12-year-old son Deon was crushed in Wednesday morning's surge.

"It was 6am and a steward said pack up, get in the queue but then everyone who came late surged forward. My son was crushed and started being sick.

"We set off from Oxford yesterday afternoon and now I am separated from friends who are in the other queue."

By late morning the queue had been divided into three sections; one in the car park and another at the top of steps leading down to the final leg at the ticket booth.

Police were allowing fans to trickle out to join the final queue at the ticket stand.

But at 12.30pm the crowd at the top of the steps began to bristle as just a couple of people were let out of the pen at a time.

The crush was only calmed as police officers filtered in to stand in between the tightly packed supporters.

Joseph Johnson, 54, of Beeston, said: "It was a party atmosphere last night, it was brilliant but the organisation has been an absolute shambles. There's been no channelling of the crowds and there wasn't a single steward up there in that car park last night to make sure those who were queuing kept to the queues."

Peter Fardoe, 49, travelled from The Wirral. "There's a complete lack of organisation at the club. People are dehydrated, people are fainting. It's not the police, it's not the fans, it's the club!"

The remnants of 24 hours of queuing chaos were evident in the car park last night as empty booze bottles, tents, chairs and duvets lay strewn across the dusty ground.

School teacher Graham Peel, 50, from Halifax, summed up the nightmare. "This is organised chaos, it's the worst I have ever seen it. It's an absolute disgrace. I have been a supporter of Leeds for 41 years. It's the fans who are suffering all the time. People have been here since last night and we have been let down."

Steve Rhodes, 38, said: "Fans are just seen as cash cows - they don't really care about us."

Fans were so annoyed by the way they had been treated it had been feared their anger might errupt into violence when tickets inevitably sold out but most said everyone was too drained by the "horrible" experience.

Several said the club had lost their respect and support and they wouldn't be buying a season ticket again.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Due to the large number of people at Elland Road queuing for tickets, in anticipation that many of those present would not be able to purchase a ticket, and in the interests of crowd safety, police took a decision to place a cordon at a particular point at the ground to prevent people unable to get a ticket from rushing that point. "This was put in place at around 6am to secure the area prior to the ticket office opening."

In a statement, Leeds United said: "The club experienced massive queues as the tickets were released for sale to season ticket holders and members to obtain an additional three tickets per card.

"Both season ticket holders and members have already had their priority booking periods which guaranteed them one ticket each.

"No further tickets will be available and we hope that those who are not able to attend are able to support the club from Leeds on Sunday."

Club members and season ticket holders were allowed to buy up to three tickets each and even before the last ticket had been sold at the club there were reports of them being offered by touts for up to £200 each.

I've been struggling all season to afford the "premiership priced" tickets and cannot afford the extra £50 membership. Now they tell us, on the day that tickets were supposed to go on general sale, that members and season ticket holders only are able to buy another 3 tickets each. This led to people buying tickets and immediately selling them for £120 each outside the ground, & now there are none left!
As a disabled supporter I was told to email my ticket request & I am still awaiting a reply almost a week later. The true fans who struggle finacially to afford tickets week in & out have been greatly let down by the Leeds administration. If this is the kind of contempt with which Mr Bates treats the fans, then Leeds utd have a dire future in store.

leeds united let them selfs down agin with the ticket fiasco. why did they not let season ticket and members have two tickets each which could have been done over the weekend then general sale on monday tuesday. no excuse for not getting tickets on saturday or sunday from club and then 2 tickets max to general sale on monday ect. to allow season ticket holders then members to have one each then allow them to get an extra 3 each so getting two bites at the cherry is totaly wrong. and im sure the club can get details of who is selling the tickets on the black market because im sure the names and details are on each ticket issued of who bought them therefore the club can ban the people concerned from buying any more tickets for big games in the future for the next 5 to 10 years. it is disgusting that they bought tickets then went to the back of queue and offered them at over £100. Come on leeds will you never learn ?????

Once again, the club displays an alarming lack of compassion and customer care. The fiasco which I endured trying to obtain a ticket for the Carlisle game should have warned me, but I fell for it again with regards to a Wembley ticket. Not the fact I didn't get one, there were people far more deserving than me, but the total disrespect shown to the fans by the club in terms of communication was totally unacceptable.

we all know the story of how events unfolded, what I find unbelievable is that not one person from the club came out to issue a statement at any time during the whole fiasco, so everyone there fed off rumour & stories developed which only led to the frustration & anger on display. No one (police, stewards, ticket office) could offer any snippet of information on which the huge crowd could make an informed decision on whether to stay or go, which was the main source of anger and frustration from most there.

To be told (bluntly) by a steward, at 5.45 "sorry, there's no tickets left, can you all please make your way home", in my opinion highlights the total contempt & disregard with which this club treats its loyal followers.

Lets hope you go up Leeds, because with ticket prices increased by 20% (more club arrogance), the way fans have been treated leads me to believe crowds may diminish, people's loyalties have been tested to the limit.

I saw alst night a club spokesman stating "we don't think we could have handled things any better", if that's an honest appraisal of events yesterday, yuo deserve to be where you are, you should be ashamed of yourselves as a club

Leeds United a massive club??
I don't think so. We are a 3rd division club (hopefully soon to be 2nd) with a massive fan base but that doesn't make us a massive club.
This is illustrated graphically by yesterdays shambolic organisation of the ticket sales at Elland Road.
After the mayhem of the last playoff ticketing shambles we were promised and assured that "it wouldn't happen again"...the club were right....it was worse.
A massive club :
1.. would have had adequate stewards available to stop the surge which happened at 5-30am
2.. would have opened all available windows to get tickets sold quicker...this actually beggars belief that this was not done.
3... would have "in such exceptional circumstances" opened before 9am when it was clear that there were massive numbers queuing the night before.
4... anticipated the likely demand and treated all fans more fairly by limiting say to 2 tickets per card
5... provided some/any information.

The fact that none of the above issues were instigated demonstrates that the club and it's administration team are small and the loyal fan base is massive.
The club do not deserve the following they have especially when they pull stunts like yesterday.
The cynic in me would contest that the club were quite happy to see fans queuing more than 13 hours as my friend did to come away with no tickets as it would make it look massive however it makes the club looking incompetent and 3rd rate....this would not happen at the massive clubs like Arsenal, Man u Chelsea Liverpool etc.
My question therefore is who is accountable and why was it not anticipated that there was such demand when all the fans knew there was as well as answering the above 5 points.

Poor....very poor

PS can you imagine queuing for over 13 hours from 5am to 6pm to not get any tickets.....SHAME ON YOU LEEDS

Andrew R:

Excellent post, my feelings completely, who on behalf of the club is going to come out & answer these questions? Because the guy they sent out last night (Dews?) was embarassing, he couldn't even apologise for the fans who were crushed ( I think his comment was "it was unfortunate..."!). Who is going to be held accountable for the fact that so many tickets fell into the hands of touts (surely this can be traced back to season ticket holders? Or can't we be bothered?)I'm visiting the website for an officail 'explanation'but so far it's just telling me that all tickets are sold (you don't say!) & asking for my support at the ground!! (hoping we'll shell out more money to the club, which is a bare faced cheek given the way we've all been treated. Big Club? Big fan base, loyal fan base, small time operational procedures - how disappointing

I can't believe the club hasn't even issued an apology on their website after yesterdays farce! Just shows what they think of their supporters.

What do people think about ST holders and members being given the opportunity to buy extra tickets yesterday for friends and family that are jumping on the Wembley band waggon? What about the real fans that have been going all season, paying Premiership prices for 3rd division football. Disgusting to see that so many 'loyal' ST holders are happy to screw fellow supporters with their extra tickets - shame on you.

GazB84,i fully agree with you . im a member and got my ticket but i do not agree that some should buy to sell on to other leeds fans at black market prices. i hope Ken bates does something about this. and has for the spokesman dews he was just happy to be in front of a camera yesterday.

The Leeds United fans who go to matches week in week out - the cash paying leeds fans - who cant afford season tickets who support the club by buying tickets, programmes, drinks, food, travel have been cheated by the club again.

Season ticket holders and members should have been allowed 2 tickets each then the general public should have been allowed to buy.

Why are fans expected to be loyal to club when Ken Bate's has messed up yet again??

From a die hard Leeds United fan who will never attend a Leeds match again.

steve morton: you really think Ken Bates is bothered? they've sold out the allocation, that's all that matters. Still no apology on the website, the opening hours for the shop selling wembley merchandise is on though. it's all about priorities, drawing more money out of fans' pockets is more important than a statement or apology it seems
