EMMERDALE star Chris Chittell said his co-star Clive Hornby meant "everything to everyone" in an emotional tribute to the show's longest-serving actor, who has died at the age of 63.
Clive, who played farmer Jack Sugden in the Leeds-based soap, died on Thursday after a three-month battle with a mystery illness.
Fellow Emmerdale actor Chris, who is also one of the show's longest-serving stars, spoke yesterday of his devastation at the death of Clive, who first appeared in the Leeds-produced show in 1980.
The 60-year-old, who plays Eric Pollard, said: "Clive meant everything to everyone. He had a wicked sense of humour.
"He was a very private and courageous man and not only a great contributor to the show but also to all our lives.
"He was a great guy and will obviously be missed."
Series producer Anita Turner added: "Losing Clive is an enormous blow to everyone both here at Emmerdale and at ITV.
Loved
"He loved Emmerdale and we talked long and hard about how he would return to the show. The last time I saw him was on Tuesday and even then we were joking about how he would just walk into the green room and surprise everyone.
"I have always said that Emmerdale is a family. Today we lost our father."
Clive, who lived in Ilkley, was initially offered just a three-month contract to play Jack Sugden and made his first appearance on screen on February 19, 1980. An astonishing 28 years later, after his character's three marriages and five children, he remained one of the show's most popular stars – and in an interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post last year, he said he still loved being a part of the show.
Clive was born Liverpool and started out as an accounts clerk, before enjoying success as a drummer with pop group The Dennisons in the 1960s.
He later appeared in TV shows including Get Some In, Gerry Anderson's Space 1999 and Minder, before making his first appearance in Emmerdale in 1980.
Some of Jack's highlights include fighting to save his livestock during the Emmerdale killer thunderstorm in 2003; while in 2004, he survived after being shot by his own son, village bad boy Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher).
